HE SHAPED US FROM THE RIVER.
The Egyptians said the first people were made on a potter’s wheel, out of river clay, by a ram-headed god at the source of the Nile. The chest holds a ram’s skull in bone-white ink, two sand-gold horns curling around it, and one thin oxblood crack down the bone. The back is left plain.
The Story
His name was Khnum, and he sat at Egypt’s southern gate, on the island of Elephantine, where the Nile first breaks over the rocks. He had the head of a ram. Beneath his temple, the Egyptians believed, lay the caverns where the flood began.
He was a potter. On his wheel he shaped human beings from Nile clay, and when a child was conceived he was thought to be at the wheel again, forming the body and, beside it, the ka, the child’s double. In the queen Hatshepsut’s temple he is carved doing exactly that, two small figures on his wheel, identical.
He also held the water. A stone near Aswan tells of seven years without a flood, a starving country, and a king who finally went to Elephantine to ask who ruled the river. Khnum answered in a dream, and the water rose.
The print takes the whole chest: a ram’s skull in rough bone-white brushwork, two great sand-gold horns curling around it, and one thin oxblood crack running down the bone. The potter’s work, seen from the far end. The back is plain.
Every person was made once, by hand, from the river.
