THE WORLD WAS HIS BODY.
Before the gods, before the tree and before the sea, there was a giant. The Norse called him Ymir, and when the gods killed him they built the world from his body: earth from his flesh, seas from his blood, mountains from his bones. The front carries Ymir as a huge black-ink face, a long beard falling down the whole chest, and one oxblood-red slash across the brow.
The Story
The Norse creation story does not begin with a god. It begins with a gap, a void between a land of ice and a land of fire. Where frost met flame, the ice melted, and from the dripping rime came Ymir, the first living being and the ancestor of every giant.
He was not a ruler and he was not a villain. He was the first thing that existed. Odin and his two brothers, who were part giant themselves, killed him, and carried the body into the middle of the void to build a world from it. The poems list the parts: the earth was his flesh, the sea and lakes were his blood, the mountains his bones, the trees his hair, and the sky his skull, held up at four corners by four dwarves.
The front print is Ymir as a face, drawn in rough black brushwork: deep, dark eye sockets, a heavy nose and a beard that falls in dripping strands down the whole chest. A single oxblood-red slash cuts across the forehead, the one mark of colour in the ink.
He is the giant who is the ground, and the Norse believed we still live on him.
