GREEK LEGENDS

The Last Wall

Nine years, the gates held. One man was the gate. The back carries Hector before the walls of Troy: crested helm, shield at his side, spear in hand, cloak torn by the wind, the gate behind him under a red slab. The chest holds his helm.

The Story

In the Iliad, Troy has a wall, and Troy has Hector. Only one of them stands to the end.

Hector was Priam's eldest son and the city's last real defence. He did not start the war. He fought it every day it asked, knowing how it would end, and he told his wife so at the gate, plainly.

Achilles was the storm. Hector was the man who stands in front of his home and does not move. When the Greeks reached the ships, he drove them back. When Achilles returned, he stayed outside the walls alone while his parents begged him from above to come in.

The back print leaves him where the poem leaves him: before the gate of Troy, cloak torn, shield at his side, spear in hand, the red behind him.

The chest holds his helm. The one he took off once, to hold his son. He put it back on.

Some win the war. Some hold the wall.
