THE FLOWER WAS THE TRAP.
She reached for a flower in a meadow. The ground opened. The chest holds the narcissus alone. The back shows the same flower rising from a crack in the earth, the split below it filled with ochre-gold, roots hanging down either side of the chasm.
The Story
Persephone was gathering flowers when she saw the narcissus. It had a hundred blooms and a scent so sweet that heaven, earth and sea were said to laugh at it. Earth had grown it as a lure, by the will of Zeus.
She reached for it. The ground split open, and Hades came up out of the crack in a golden chariot. Only Hecate and the sun heard her cry.
Her mother Demeter searched nine days with torches. When she learned where Persephone had gone, she held back the harvest, and nothing would grow until her daughter was returned.
Hades let her go, but first he gave her a pomegranate seed. Whoever eats in the land of the dead does not leave it for good. She would spend part of every year below, and the fields would go bare each time she went.
The back print is the moment after the flower: the narcissus rising from the crack, ochre-gold in the chasm below it, the roots hanging down on both sides. The chest holds the flower alone, before anyone touches it.
The flower was never an accident. It was the way down.
