In the beginning, there was only sky and sea.
No earth. No animals. No people. Only the Forefathers — Tepeu and Gucumatz — sitting in the primordial darkness, thinking the world into existence with nothing but their words and their will.
They spoke. And the earth rose from the water.
Then they spoke again.
Let there be deer.
This is one of the earliest moments in the Popol Vuh — the sacred creation epic of the Kʼicheʼ Maya. Before humans were attempted. Before the Hero Twins descended into Xibalba. Before any of the great mythological battles that would define Maya cosmology — the Forefathers simply created the animals. The deer. The birds. The jaguars. The serpents. Each called into existence by name.
The animals could not speak back. They could not worship their creators. So the Forefathers would try again — with mud, then with wood, then finally with maize — each attempt bringing humanity closer to its eventual form.
But the deer came first.
This design is drawn directly from ancient Maya pottery — the circular ceramic tradition through which the Maya recorded their most sacred stories. The concentric rings of geometric patterns on the outer border are authentic Maya ceramic motifs. The central scene depicts the moment of first creation — the deer brought into being by the Forefathers of the Popol Vuh.
It is not a modern interpretation. It is a direct visual translation of a story that the Maya told on pottery, on stone, on bark paper, and in oral tradition for thousands of years before it was ever written down.

Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Do not bleach. Do not tumble dry. Iron on reverse if needed. The fabric softens with each wash but holds its form.
