HE NEVER PUT IT DOWN.
The gods lost the war, so one Titan was given the sky to hold. He has not put it down since. On the back, Atlas kneels under a vault of cracked gold, the whole weight across his shoulders. On the chest, two columns and a lintel, already tilting.
★★★★★★★★★★The Story
Before the Olympians, there were the Titans. When the Titans lost, every one of them was punished.
Most were thrown into Tartarus. Atlas was given a different sentence. Zeus set him at the western edge of the world and put the sky on his shoulders. He was not told how long. There was no one to relieve him, and no one was meant to.
The old poets disagree about almost everything else. Some say he stands. Some say he kneels. They agree on the one fact that matters: the sky never gets lighter, and he never gets to set it down. Heracles took it from him for an afternoon, and when Atlas was free he tried to leave it with him. The trick that put it back on Atlas is the only freedom the story allows.
The back carries him at the moment the weight shows: a kneeling Titan, every muscle drawn tight, a vault of cracked gold above him. The chest carries what he is holding up — two columns and a lintel of broken stone, tilting, still standing.
Cut for people who carry things no one else sees. Some weights are not set down. They are simply carried well.
