SHE PUT HER FOOT ON HIS HEAD.

Mahishasura, the buffalo demon, had asked Brahma for a boon: that no man, and no god, could kill him. He thought he had asked for forever. He drove the gods out of heaven and sat on their thrones.

The gods, with nowhere left to turn, gave their anger to each other — and the anger took shape as a goddess. Each of them gave her a weapon: a trident from Shiva, a discus from Vishnu, a lion to ride. In the Devi Mahatmyam she is Durga, Mahishasuramardini, the one who destroys Mahishasura.

For nine nights he fought her and changed shape — a buffalo, a lion, an elephant, a man. On the last, as a buffalo, she pinned him under her foot and drove her trident through him. He tried to climb out of the animal's mouth, and she finished it with the sword. Navaratri is the nine nights. Vijayadashami is the tenth morning.

On Chamundi Hill above Mysuru the same goddess, as Chamundeshwari, is still said to hold the city he gave his name to.

This design carries the moment before the end. On the back, the buffalo's head with its horns raised and the ring through its nose, her ankleted foot pressed on his brow, and a red wash torn across the sky above.
