HE KEEPS THE HOUR.

In the Vedic cosmos, time is not a measure. It is a force with a name: Kaal. The Puranas give that force a keeper. Shiva takes the form of Kalabhairava, the fierce lord who guards time and the city of Kashi, and a dog walks at his side.

In the telling, Bhairava rose from Shiva's anger and took the fifth head of Brahma, and the skull stayed in his hand until he reached Kashi. There it fell, and he stayed as the city's kotwal, its guardian. In Kashi, the old saying goes, no one stays without his leave.

The design holds both halves. On the back, Kalabhairava stands in the dark, skulls strung at his chest and his staff upright, the dog beside him with its eyes lit. On the chest, the wheel of time, cracked and scattered in embers, still turning. Antique detail on black, worn rather than explained.

Time does not rush. It has a guardian.
