She Took Their Names
Two demons came with an army. She walked out with their heads and their names. Chanda and Munda hang from the cord on the chest — gold-boned, horned, still bleeding. The back is her face: crowned, dark as the cremation ground, the wrath-eye open in a seam of red down the brow. She did not earn the title. She collected it.
The Story
SHE IS NAMED FOR THE TWO SHE KILLED.
When Chanda and Munda — the war-generals of the asura kings Shumbha and Nishumbha — came to drag the Goddess before their masters, her face went dark with rage. From the fold of her furious brow a figure stepped out: black, gaunt, dressed in a tiger skin, a skull-staff in one hand and a drawn sword in the other. She went through the demon host like a fire through dry grass, seized the two generals by the hair, and struck their heads from their shoulders.
She carried the heads back and set them down at the Goddess's feet. For that, she was given a name built from the two she had beheaded — Cha from Chanda, munda from Munda. Chamunda. A title that is also a body count.
On the hill above Mysuru she is Chamundeshwari, the crowned goddess who killed the buffalo demon Mahishasura and kept a kingdom under her watch. Cremation ground and throne room, skull garland and crown — the same goddess wears both, and never chose between them.
The chest carries Chanda and Munda themselves: two horned, fanged skulls strung from a single cord, worked in old gold, a thread of blood still running from between them. The trophy that named her.
The back carries her face. Wild-haired, ash-dark, a small gold crown set above the brow, and the wrath-eye open in a red seam down the centre of her forehead — the same brow she was born from. No text. The face is the whole argument.
The Details
Care
Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Do not bleach. Do not tumble dry. Iron on reverse if needed. The fabric softens with each wash but holds its form.
