EGYPT MYTHOS

The Seventh Hour

Egypt did not believe the sun would rise. It believed the sun would be defended. The back carries the night crossing: Ra's boat on the black river, a spear raised at the prow, Apep rearing against a burning sun. The front holds the scarab, the rising sun at its smallest.

The Story

Every evening Ra set in the west and went down into the Duat. Every morning he came up in the east. The Egyptians never called that nature. They called it a victory, won again in the dark before every dawn.

He crossed in the night boat, the Mesektet, through twelve hours of gates and guardians. The dead woke as his light passed over them and slept again when it left. And somewhere in the river, Apep waited.

Apep had no temple and no priests, only rites made to destroy him. The texts place the worst of the fight in the seventh hour, when the serpent's coils drain the water from beneath the boat and leave the sun stranded.

Then the crew answers. Isis and Serqet bind the serpent with their spells. At the prow, Seth lifts the spear and drives it home. The river runs. The boat floats free.

The back print is that hour: the sun huge and burning above the water, the serpent rearing out of the dark, the spear-bearer small and upright in the boat. The chest carries the scarab, the form the Egyptians gave the sun at the moment it rises.

Every sunrise was a fight someone won.
