Before Shiva dances the world to its end, someone has to keep the time. Nandi, the first devotee, does not dance. He plays. On the back, Nandi crouched with the drum on his knees, a gold trident rising behind his horns. On the chest, a temple bell hung between two crescents. The gate is kept by the one who stays. So is the beat.

At the door of every Shiva temple sits a bull who has not moved. Nandi is the gatekeeper of the destroyer and his first devotee. He is also, in many tellings, the one who plays.
When Shiva dances the Tandava, the dance that unmakes the world so it can be made again, it is Nandi at the drum, holding the rhythm the whole cosmos moves to. He does not dance. He keeps the time. The stillness was always his power. Here it has a sound.
On the back, Nandi bull-headed and broad-shouldered, crouched with the drum across his knees, a gold trident rising behind his horns and red cloth torn around him. On the chest, a temple bell hung beneath a bull between two gold crescents: the sound every devotee makes at the threshold he guards. Ink, bone-white, gold and oxblood on black.
Movement proves nothing. The beat is kept by the one who stays.
The Details
Care
Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Do not bleach. Do not tumble dry. Iron on reverse if needed. The fabric softens with each wash but holds its form.
