The Silence Behind Him
He turned once, one step from the light. Below, he never has to turn again. The back carries the last scene: Orpheus and Eurydice as one figure, two faces in profile, their hair gone to black branches and red leaves. The lyre stands at their side. The chest holds the same lyre, rising from the hem on roots of red.
The Story
Orpheus walked into the land of the dead with a lyre and one rule. Do not look back.
The song carried him past Charon, past Cerberus, into the hall of Hades. It won him his wife. It could not keep him from the last step, where the silence behind him grew too loud and he turned.
Ovid does not leave him there. When Orpheus goes down a second time, as a shade, he finds Eurydice. They walk the fields of the dead together, sometimes she ahead, sometimes he, and now he may look at her whenever he likes.
The back print is that scene. Two faces, one body, one shared crown of branches going red at the tips. The lyre rests beside them.
The chest holds the lyre alone, rising from the hem into its own roots. The one thing he carried out of the dark.
He lost her once by looking. Down there, he looks as long as he wants.
