THE WATERS RUN FROM HIS HORNS.
On the roof of Odin’s hall a stag stands eating the leaves of a tree. Water drips from his antlers into the spring at the bottom of the world, and every river begins there. The back carries Eikþyrnir head-on, with thorned black antlers threaded with oxblood-red spreading across the whole back.
The Story
The poem says it in one stanza. On the roof of Valhalla, among the shield-shingles and the spear-rafters, a stag called Eikþyrnir, “Oak-Thorny,” bites at the branches of a tree. From his horns, water drips into Hvergelmir, the great spring at the bottom of the cosmos, and from there all the waters of the world run.
Hvergelmir is where the serpent Níðhöggr gnaws at the root of the tree. The rivers that flow out of it, in the poem’s long list of names, run among the gods, among humans and down to the dead. Each morning Thor wades four of them on his way to judgement. All of it began in a stag’s antlers.
He is not one of the four stags who strip the world tree’s branches. He stands apart, on the hall, and what he takes from the tree he gives back as water.
The back print is him, seen head-on: a grey, worn face in rough brushwork, a shaggy neck dissolving into dark fibre, and antlers that spread across the whole upper back, black and thorned like a winter forest, with oxblood-red running through the wood and a small red knot mark on each antler. The branches do not stop where an antler would stop.
In a mythology full of endings, he is the one that starts things.

Care
Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Do not bleach. Do not tumble dry. Iron on reverse if needed. The fabric softens with each wash but holds its form.
