Achilles was told, before he ever sailed for Troy, that there were two roads. A long life at home, quiet and forgotten. Or a short one at Troy, and a name that would outlast the stone it was cut in. In the Iliad he says it himself: he knows which one he took.
His anger is where the poem begins. Agamemnon takes the prize that was his, and Achilles puts down his spear and sits beside his ships while his own army is cut down. It is not cowardice. It is the one man who could end the war refusing to, and nobody can make him.
It takes the death of his closest friend, Patroclus, to bring him back. When he returns, nothing holds. He drives the Trojans back across the plain, kills Hector before the walls, and in his grief will not even let the body rest.
The poem ends with an old king kneeling in his tent, asking for his son's body back, and the man who has refused everyone weeps with him.
The back carries him at the height of it: helm crested, spear flung wide, shield on his arm, a torn red cloak whipping behind him, his body drawn white against the dark. The chest carries the helm alone.
