The king forbade the burial. She went out to the field anyway, with a handful of earth and a jar to pour from. The back shows Antigone on her knees in a spreading pool of red, the walls and towers of Thebes on the horizon above her. The chest holds the jar, tipped over, the offering running out of it.
The Story
Two brothers killed each other at the gates of Thebes. One was buried with honours. The other was left on the plain.
The new king, Creon, called Polynices a traitor and forbade anyone to bury him. The penalty was death. For the Greeks a body had to be covered with earth and honoured with offerings, or the soul found no rest.
Their sister Antigone buried him anyway. In Sophocles she covers the body with dust, and when the guards sweep it away she comes back and pours the offering again. That is where they catch her, still kneeling.
Creon asked how she dared. She said his decree was a man’s, and the unwritten laws of the gods were older than any king.
The back print is that field: the walls of Thebes along the horizon, and Antigone on her knees in the red. The chest holds the jar, tipped, the offering pouring out.
The law said leave him. She knelt and finished the rite.

Care
Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Do not bleach. Do not tumble dry. Iron on reverse if needed. The fabric softens with each wash but holds its form.
