Herald of the Underworld
Before the lords of Xibalba spoke, the owl did. It flew ahead of the summons, and the house it landed on already knew. The back carries the muan bird: horned, pale-eyed, its tufts branching like antlers, a column of glyphs carved down its breast. It is not hunting. It is announcing.
The Story
In Xibalba, no lord came to collect in person. A messenger came first.
The Maya called it the muan bird, the horned owl of the underworld. The lords of Xibalba sent owls to summon the Hero Twins' father down to his death, and across Mesoamerica the owl's night call was read as the same message. A proverb still says it: when the owl cries, someone dies.
It does not attack. It does not pursue. It perches, it watches, it waits. Its work is to be seen.
The back print is that arrival: a great horned owl facing you straight on, its eyes lit, its horns branching like antlers, the feathers of its breast breaking apart into the dark, and a column of Maya glyphs down its chest like a message being delivered.
