THE LENGTH WAS NEVER YOURS.
Three sisters sit at the well beneath the world tree, and the length was decided before you were old enough to ask. One spins. One measures. One cuts, and the cut does not reopen — not for kings, not for gods. The chest carries one of the three alone, hooded and faceless, with a cut of oxblood falling from it. The back carries all three at the roots, thread stretched taut between their hands, runes of the debt carved into the roots beneath their feet, and the blood of the cut rising behind them.
The Story
Three sisters sit beneath the roots of Yggdrasil, at a well no one else is permitted to drink from, and they decide what happens next. Not might. Not prayer. Whatever they spin, measure, and cut becomes the shape of every life in the nine worlds, god included.
Urd holds what has already happened. Verdandi holds what is happening now. Skuld holds what is owed and has not yet been paid. Together they are one thread pulled through three sets of hands, and no one — not Odin, not the wolf waiting to swallow him at the end of everything — gets to see past the point where Skuld's knife comes down.
They do not argue with kings, and they have never once been talked out of a length. What they decide, they carve into the bark of the world tree in runes that do not need to be read twice, and no cut has ever been recorded as undone.
The chest carries one of the three alone, hooded and faceless, the cut of oxblood falling behind it. The back carries the three themselves, robes without faces, thread stretched taut between their hands over a tangle of roots marked in the same runes that keep the debt, and above them a torn mass of oxblood, the price of the length.
