MAYAN LEGACY

Camazotz — House of Bats

The twins had one rule in the fifth house of Xibalba: stay sealed inside the blowgun, do not look out until dawn. Hunahpu looked. Camazotz — the death bat of the Maya underworld, wings spread across the dark. It took the head before the head knew it was gone.

The Story

Deep in Xibalba, past the House of Cold and the House of Razors, there is a house that is only darkness and sound.

Camazotz — Death Bat — ruled it. The name is two Kʼicheʼ Maya words with nothing soft between them: kame, death, and sotz, bat. In the Popol Vuh he waits in Zotzilaha, the House of Bats, where the walls move and the screeching never stops.

The Hero Twins, Hunahpu and Xbalanque, came through it on their way to break the lords of the underworld. The plan was to pass the night sealed inside their own blowguns and not come out for anything. Near morning, Hunahpu edged his head out to see whether the sun had risen. Camazotz was already there. One pass, and the head was gone — hung over the Xibalban ballcourt like a trophy until Xbalanque won it back with a carved substitute and a trick.

He is older than that story. In the wreck of the first, failed world, a face-cutting bat came among the wooden people and took their heads too. The Maya carved bat-gods onto death urns three thousand years ago and set their wings over doorways — the animal that sleeps where the dead sleep, and flies when the boundary goes thin.

The back carries him with both wings fully open, worn and gold-flecked against the bone of the shirt — the shape that came down out of the rafters. The chest is marked THE UNDERWORLD, the series this house has ruled since it began.
