THE FLOOD WAS HIS BLOOD.
When the gods killed Ymir, his blood poured out as a flood and drowned the whole race of frost giants but one. Bergelmir and his wife rode it out on a boat, and the war between giants and gods went on because they lived. The back carries the flood: a wave of oxblood and black ink rising and curling over, five hands reaching up out of the foam, and one small boat riding the swell below.
The Story
The Norse creation story ends the first giant’s life in blood. Ymir, the first living being, was killed by Odin and his two brothers, and so much blood poured from his wounds that it became a flood. The flood drowned almost every frost giant alive, Ymir’s own children and grandchildren among them.
One giant survived. Bergelmir and his wife climbed onto a boat and rode the red water out, and from the two of them the next generations of giants descend. It is an unusual flood story: the survivor is not a hero chosen by the gods, he is their enemy, saved by luck and a boat.
The back print is the flood itself, drawn in rough black ink and oxblood red. A single wave rises from the lower back to the shoulder blades and curls over at the top, with spiral carvings turning in the water. Five hands reach up out of the foam along the crest, the giants who drowned in it. At the bottom, small and black on the swell, one boat rides it out.
The gods built the world from what was left of Ymir, but first his blood drowned a people.
