The Story

THE ARROW THAT WAITED.

Three cities hung in the sky, one of gold, one of silver, one of iron, built for the three sons of the demon Tarakasura. Each came with a boon: the cities could be destroyed only by one arrow, shot once, at the instant all three stood in a single line. The gods tried everything else. Nothing touched them.

Rudra, the roarer of the Vedas, whom the tradition grows into Shiva, did not rush. He waited for the cities to drift into line, and then he loosed the one arrow. Three cities burned in a single stroke. He is remembered as Tripurantaka: the ender of the three cities.

This design holds the strike and the stillness before it. On the back, three cities strung along a single arrow over a red burn, the black masses of the fortresses breaking apart. On the chest, Rudra's eye in close shot: dark brows spread like wings, three lines of ash above, a red seam opening down the centre. Ink and oxblood with a thread of gold on Bone White.
